1000 m men

Considered a distance for kids, especially in Norway, and it shows in the list, which contains a lot of unknown Norwegians, plus a handful of known ones, high and low. No doubt some of the top 100 are missing, because habitually, only the three best results were published from young boys’ races. Also kids’ races seem to be poorly preserved in Sweden and Finland. The distance was popular in Germany before the formation of the ISU, and remained so, which is also somewhat evident from the list. It was probably introduced as an official record distance (in 1898) in the hope that the kilometer eventually would get the same classical status as the mile. This failed utterly, though.

I wonder if #30 B Becker and #57 Bruno Becker could be one and the same.

Spot the waltz king at #84.

Only three Finns. Can you spot the third?

So dominated by the Feb. 9 event. The ice seems to have been good at Frogner on that date as well. And in Karlstad. Many other interesting points to note here, too, if you look for them. Who’s the best Einar Hansen in the world today? I’m glad Sivert Sjøvold made it to the list. Such a nice Trøndish name.

3000 m men

This distance was popular in Germany before the formation of the ISU, and has been regaining some popularity there after a decline in the 90s. This is reflected in the list, but a stronger effect comes from its sudden popularity in the Netherlands after the turn of the century. Like the Norwegians, the Dutch were strongly concerned about the economical aspect of the game, and were reluctant to expose their audiences to really long distances. A national championship with a full programme was tried a couple of times, but apparently didn’t strike home. Rather the combination 2x500 + 2x1500 + 3000 m seems to have taken hold. (Perhaps we should note world records in it.) A pleasant, quick combination that can be done without asking too much of the audience. The 3000 m seems to be a limit for short-trackers and their spectators as well. Maybe it’s unnatural to watch more than 3000 m of skating at a time? Maybe we northerners have destroyed speedskating by insisting on such long distances as we have done for a 100 years?

In the list below, I am deviating from Preben’s list in several places.

I have omitted the 4.58,8 of Mathisen. The fact that he set a pb in the 1500 m earlier the same day with 2.29,9 is suspicious enough in itself. Apparently the race is a handicap race or some such thing.

I am certain that #30 K Orbanowski is identical to the K Orban who skated 6.49,4 in Berlin 1907.

I am certain that the Nilssen who skated 6.41,8 in Berlin, Jan 13, 1893, is identical to #43 Halvdan Nielsen, who skated 6.41,8 in Berlin, Jan 13, 1892.

I believe that W Kuntzfeld is the same as #45 W Kreutzfeld, and I suspect that #81 W Krenzien also is the same.

I gravely suspect that #51 Robt Beijn is guilty of being identical to #63 R Beijens as well.

And as we have only three more, let’s give them a mention as well:

101.Bjørn Kraabøl 8.12,0 Lillehammer 21 Mar 1897
102.H Uthke 8.17,4 Frankfurt 04 Jan 1891
103.Jakob N D Jong 9.36,0 Hamburg 09 Feb 1887

I wonder if he still is last.

I also wonder if the Russians were taking times with clocks having a 10 second precision. But perhaps Sedov just was lucky in skating 5.40,0 and then 5.30,0 the year after.

5000 m men

Some notable facts:
This list shows vividly how much 5000 m skating had deteriorated since the 1890s. I guess the skaters around 1908 thought (like Pat Seltsam) that the 5000 m was just a short version of the 10000 m. The Norwegian reluctance to skate the 10000 m shows up strongly here, too, with a number of skaters who appear high up, but don’t have a ranking in the Adelskalender. Most notably Halvorsen, of course, but also excellent skaters like the Norsengs, Mauseth, Karl B Olsen. Engelsaas suffers too, though he has one, like Bye.

Other:
The pb of Bønsnæs (#36) is skated with a fall. Wonder what the new Russian record holder at #33 can do at Frogner next year.
Not many Olympic gold medallists here, but see the one at #71. The first official 500 m world record holder didn’t make it to the 500 m list, but he made it to this one. Actually he could have been a 5000 m record holder, too, if the ISU had been less arbitrary in picking their pre-formation official world records. Curiously, he didn’t skate any other metrical distances.
Several of the times here are set in the same meet where Oscar Fredriksen improved the above-mentioned 5000 m would-be record by 25 seconds.

And I’d like to mention some that barely failed to make it, in part due to the blatant cheating of Hansen, Søvik and Christiansen:

101.Halstein Øvergaard 9.37,0 Hamar 05 Feb 1893
Early talent from Storelvdalens IK, a district later more famous for skiers, I think.
Bjørn Kraabøl 9.37,0 Lillehammer 02 Mar 1902
Lillehammer first good skater, famous among statisticians because of his 47,2, forever doubtful.
105.Paul Behrens 9.37,6 Stockholm 21 Feb 1892
Not the famous clockmaker? At least he timed himself very precisely, 1 minute behind Eden. Nor the one who studied physics in Rostock 1905?
10000 m men

Things to note:
#15 - probably the pairmate, lapped after about 7500 m. The conditions at St. Petersburg on Feb. 27, 1898, may have been exceptional, but I can’t help feeling a little qeasy about it. #21 Krjukov’s time looks reasonable enough, I guess, but what about those sprinters at #28 and #36?
#47 had a long career, with a very modest start, but eventually achieving some decent times around 1901. His 18.56,6 from 1904 is considered doubtful, and it is out of proportion to his other results from that year. But what if it’s only the year that is wrong?
#81 could have improved his pb easily on several occasions, but I guess he was fond of it, and I guess with good reason.
